“At first I was using avocado oil just on my body, but then I realized it works on my face, and my hair too, for that matter! It’s a one-stop shop.” As the face of Lancôme, it’s no surprise that Nyong’o is a fan of the brand’s skincare line especially when it comes to moisturizing her naturally dry skin with the Lancôme Energie de Vie ($55) and the Lancôme Advanced Génifique Serum ($134). When she isn’t using Lancôme products, however, she loves to keep it simple with a pure avocado oil ($10) or the Hawaiian Kukul Oil ($10), both of which she purchases at the local drug store.
“I’ve found a regime that works for me; it’s low maintenance and yields great results,” she says. “I’m a lot more religious now about my skin care. I wash my face at least twice a day and I use a natural oil, like argan or avocado, before a day or night cream… Avocado oil is a big thing for me. I discovered it last year… In the wintertime when my skin is drier, it really seeps in and leaves it nice and lush.”

Although she shies away from wearing makeup when she doesn’t absolutely need it, Nyong’o isn’t afraid to pull out all the stops when she’s on the red carpet and loves to work with makeup artist Nick Barose to create dramatic looks. “I’m a lot more playful with my own makeup,” the Black Panther star admits. “I understand certain aspects that I never really understood before. Such as the difference blush can make or when you should go for metallic shadow instead of a matte one.”
Giving Barose free range on creating her look for the Oscars in 2018, Nyong’o took the red carpet in a stunning gold and black Versace gown where fashion critics praised her look for “encapsulating a strong, powerful and confident woman.” To begin, Barose moisturized Nyong’o’s skin and applied Lancôme Teint Idole Ultra Wear Foundation in 550C ($47) with an overlay of Lancôme Blush Subtil in Shimmer Petite Pomegranate ($32) for a pop of color. He used Lancôme’s Teint Idole Ultra Custom Drops in Bronze Glow ($35) to match and further contour her skin before setting the entire look with the Lancôme Translucence Pressed Powder in 550 ($32), which he also put in Nyong’o’s clutch for touch ups throughout the evening.
When she isn’t heading out on for a movie premiere or an awards ceremony, Nyong’o keeps her makeup routine simple and moisturizes her skin but skips the foundation. Instead, she adds color to her cheeks using the Lancôme Blush Subtil in Aplum ($32) and adds two layers of Lancôme Hypnose Mascara ($27.50) to accentuate her eyes.

Known for playing around with her appearance from her short hair to her gorgeous eye makeup and bold lip colors, Nyong’o admits, “I really like to have fun with color and makeup.” That’s why she’s often spotted with eyeshadow and eyeliner that match her outfits like donning a vibrant blue designer gown and pairing it with blue eyeshadow and a coral blue eyeliner like her personal favorite—the Lancôme Drama Liqui-Pencil Eyeliner ($23). For this year’s Oscars, Nyong’o had an even more powerful look thanks to Barose’s steady hand as he created an understated yet dramatic look to reflect her gorgeous gown. Barose used Lancôme’s Ombre Hypnose Stylo Shadow Stick in Bronze ($27) and blended the Lancôme Color Design Sensational Effects Eye Shadow ($21) in All That Shimmers and It List before lining her eyes with the Lancôme Drama Liqui-Pencil Eyeliner in Noir Intense ($23). To complete her sultry and empowered gaze, he applied multiple coats of Nyong’o’s favorite mascara—Lancôme’s Hypnose Mascara ($27.50)

While many actresses might tone down their lips in exchange for a bold eyeshadow, Nyong’o’s love of colorful hues knows no limits as she’s often seen with vibrant lips from cobalt blues and bubblegum pinks to deep plums and cherry reds. As a Lancôme ambassador, she’s quick to use the L’Absolu Rouge Lipstick ($32) in Luxe and Rendez-Vous but has also been known to use Le Lipstique in Mauvelle ($26) to enhance her signature pout. For the Star Wars: The Last Jedi premiere, she turned heads in a turquoise dress and bright pink lips, a shade created from the Lancôme Color Design Lipstick in Hit List ($24) and the Lancôme Juicy Shaker in Berry in Love ($22).
With her lipstick done, Barose typically adds a few finishing touches before sending Nyong’o on the red carpet with a few key things in her clutch. These items include Tatcha Blotting Papers ($12) to reduce shine, Lancôme Translucence Pressed Powder in 550 ($32), and the Lancôme L’Absolu Rouge Lipstick in Rendez-Vous ($32).

“I went to an all-boys high school and they accepted girls in only the two A.P. classes. They had these archaic rules: for example, girls couldn’t wear makeup!” Admitting that her knowledge of makeup was limited for a long time thanks to the all-boys high school where she petitioned fellow students and faculty to allow girls to wear makeup, things have certainly changed for Nyong’o who says she’s still low maintenance but loves to play around with makeup and color. “Personally, I don’t ever want to depend on makeup to feel beautiful,” she says. “But I love color and I’m enjoying trying all different shades. Makeup isn’t something I’ve worn a lot of in my life. So, it’s good to work with someone like Nick Barose who is inspired by my complexion and knows how to work with it.”
Refusing to give a second thought to other people’s opinions of her as another “pretty face” in Hollywood, Nyong’o embraces what makes her happiest and that’s nurturing her playful, curious self. “I feel my mothers have instilled in me that youth doesn’t reside in your skin, it’s in your spirit,” she says. “So, I focus on keeping myself curious and playful and nurturing my childlike wonder because that’s what keeps you youthful. I try to focus on that and being good to myself.” She also believes in being good to her body and encouraging others to do the same, which is why she signed on with Lancôme. “It’s such a great feeling that my image and the things I am able to do in the beauty world are so directly speaking to a user; that I can be an arrow is really empowering. It’s encouraging me to be the person I wish I had for someone else, that public image.” At only 35 years old, we can’t imagine what the future has in store for the Black Panther star!
