Growing up in front of the camera, Lovato is incredibly outspoken about her personal self-esteem issues as well as her struggle with bipolar disorder, addiction, and an eating disorder. Among her outspokenness and personal journey to recovery, she’s opened up about her beauty routine and the importance of embracing her faults as part of her natural beauty. This, of course, ties directly into her skincare routine and the fact that, as a teen growing up with the cameras constantly rolling, she’s had her fair share of acne (for the world to see). That’s why she continues to use Acne Rescue Treatment ($19.95) for those random breakouts.
Apart from fighting sporadic breakouts, Lovato believes in using high quality products and has developed her own skincare line—Devonne by Demi. She uses the 3-in-1 Moisturizing Primer ($29.95) daily as well as the Devonne by Demi Hydrating Radiance Mist ($24). Each week, she treats herself to a facial using the Devonne by Demi Clarifying Mud Masque ($17). And, while it’s not part of her product line, she trusts Giorgio Armani’s Prima Skin Perfecter ($100) to even her skin tone and minimize blemishes before applying her foundation.

Recalling her first beauty purchase as a lipstick from the Clinique counter using her tooth fairy money when she was five years old, Lovato loves experimenting with makeup but not without first creating a flawless canvas. To do so, she uses a beauty blender ($20) and two of her favorite MAC brushes—the 109 Small Contour Brush ($35) and the 106 Triangular Concealer Brush ($25) to evenly apply the Giorgio Armani Power Fabric Foundation ($64) or the Make Up For Ever HD Foundation ($43). She contours and highlights using the Sun N Bronze from NYC New York Color ($7) and uses the MAC 116 Blush Brush ($35) to apply the NARS Blush ($42) down her cheek bones and across the apples of her cheeks for a pop of color.

Extremely protective of her brows and refusing to let anyone touch them, Lovato tweezes her brows and better defines them using the Lovatics By Demi Eyebrow Pencil ($9) and Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Powder ($23). “I tweeze them, but I don’t let anyone touch them,” she says of her perfectly arched brows. “I haven’t let anyone touch them since I was 15!”
Lovato usually opts for a dramatic look on tour and achieves this using a blend of colors from her favorite eyeshadow palettes. Using the MAC 130 Short Duo Fibre Brush ($42), she applies shades from drugstore palettes like New York Color’s Lovatics Palette ($4.92), Revlon Color Stay Shadowlinks Eye Shadow in Onyx ($12), and Covergirl Eye Enhancers 1-Kit Eyeshadows ($3). Her favorite higher end products include MAC Eyeshadow in Folle ($16), Urban Decay in Lost ($19), Make Up For Ever ($21) shades in Sahara, Chestnut, Black Rose Diamond, and Reptile, Stila Magnificent Metals Foil Finish Eye Shadow ($32), and MAC Duo Eyeshadow ($36).
After perfecting her eyeshadow, she applies eyeliner using the Big Bold & Precise Liner by NYC New York Color ($4), curls her eyelashes using the NYC New York Color Eyelash Curler ($3) and applies a top coat of mascara using the New York Color Lovatics by Demi Mascara in Black ($11). Although she usually has lash extensions, she adds Lilly Lashes False Lashes ($24) by cutting them into five-piece strips and gluing them on in small pieces using a clear adhesive. Once the lashes are attached, she blends her natural lashes and extensions with the false lashes by adding two more coats of mascara to create an even more dramatic look.

Similar to experimenting with bold eye colors, Lovato isn’t afraid to go bold on her lips but says the one thing she would never do again is blue lipstick. “I’ve done it before for pictures with friends and photoshoots, but I can’t see myself wearing blue lipstick to a concert,” she says. Although blue lipstick is out, she’s not afraid to try other colors and usually opts for her favorite shades from Get It All Lipstick NYC Lipstick from Lovatics Collection ($3) and the MAC Cosmetics Angel Lipstick ($18.50). A few of her other favorites include the Sephora Lip Liner to Go in Nude Beige ($6), which she uses to create a strong foundation, Too Faced Lip Injection Extreme ($14), and Buxom Full On Lip Polish in Samantha ($19) and Angela ($19).

Although Lovato isn’t afraid to go bold with her makeup on tour, that doesn’t mean the 25-year-old singer, songwriter, and actress believes she has to have makeup to feel beautiful. “I think society tells us we need makeovers, but why can’t we embrace the beauty that we naturally have?” she asks. “I love makeup. I love doing my hair; I have extensions, but there’s a time and a place for everything, and natural beauty needs to be celebrated.” For Lovato, part of that natural beauty is being confident and knowing that she’s beautiful with or without the glitz and glamor. In fact, she’s one of many young actresses and singers who have started taking make-up free selfies to show their fans the power of self-confidence and natural beauty. “It’s all about being confident without makeup,” the former X Factor judge says, and we couldn’t agree more!
